Beware of Bogus Callers

Sussex Police are warning residents to be on their guard for bogus callers after a suspicious incident a house in Selmeston on Tuesday (April 28).

A man called at a house in The Street around 9.45am and said he had come to read the meter.

He is described as being around 30, of stocky build, with dark curly hair and spoke with a foreign accent, possibly Brazilian. He was wearing a black jacket and carrying some sort of electronic device.

He looked at the meter under the stairs and wrote a number down, but didn’t seem to know what he was doing.

After he had gone, the homeowner rang his electricity provider and they confirmed that no-one from their company was due to read the meter that day.

A blue Citroen Berlingo van was seen in the area around the time of the incident.

PCSO Stephen Fenn said, “If you’re not sure who is at your door, don’t open it.

“Check the identity of the caller by calling the company or organisation they claim to be from – for example the council, gas, electricity, water or even the police. Use the telephone numbers listed in your local directory or provided independently by your service provider.Beware of Bogus Callers
